Cleaning Your Tile & Grout: The Basics

Some people are well-versed on how to clean, however some of these methods might not be the best when it comes to maintaining tile and grout. You could possibly be damaging your tile’s longevity, color, and shine. Luckily, the stone professionals have compiled their tile and grout tips after years of experience and experimentation. Read on to see how you should be treating your tile and grout.

 

Use The Right Type Of Cleaner 

Acidic cleaners can do some serious damage to the look and durability of your tile and grout surfaces. All tiles provide a beautiful shine, color, and overall look that could be going to waste while you think you’re actually trying to preserve it. Many generic cleaners contain some sort of acidic element so you’ll want to check the bottle before you buy.

How To Care For Your Tile & Grout The Proper and Simple Way

If you have tile flooring or maybe tile in your bathroom or showers, then you probably know how easy the task of cleaning can get away from you. On one hand, the job is intimidating since this is a special surface that you don’t want to damage. On the other, you would probably much rather be doing anything else aside from cleaning. MARBLELIFE understands this phenomenon. So we have researched, tested, and practiced our tile and grout cleaning strategies in order to make your life easier. We’re here to teach you how to clean your tile and grout so easily and so effectively that you won’t have to feel that sense of grief much longer.

 

The Product

 

No matter what specific type of tile you have in your home, you will use the following methods. So don’t do any further research! We have your back.

 

For any process, you’ll need the proper resources and for cleaning your tile, the same concept applies. First, you’ll want to get a hold of professional, quality, non-damaging products. Using cleaners that are acidic can lead to serious color loss and crumbling in the grout joints. Myths About Bleach – What Should You Use To Clean Your Stone?

DISINFECTION MYTH 1:  DISINFECTANTS ARE ALL SAFE AND EFFECTIVE ON THEIR OWN. INCORRECT.

A WEAK DISINFECTANT MAY CREATE MORE HARM THAN GOOD.  IF YOU ARE GOING TO DISINFECT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE MOST EFFECTIVE DISINFECTANT, OR YOU MAY BE CONTRIBUTING TO A MAJOR SOCIAL PROBLEM… THE CREATION OF SUPER-BUGS.

Portrait of smiling housewife cleaning desk in bathroomBleach, though a popular choice as a disinfectant, does not actually clean, and is only a moderate disinfectant.  The version of bleach commonly sold for cleaning is a much more diluted form of Sodium Hypochlorite and as such, is not the best disinfectant.  Weak or insufficient contact with disinfectants result in bacteria and viruses that develop immunity to the disinfectant.  Failure to fully eradicate a bacterium when treating for it, whether with an antibiotic or a cleaner, allows the organism to potentially develop a defense or immunity, just as humans do after getting sick.  Ineffective disinfection is credited with being a major contributor in the rise of super bugs and secondary-infection-related deaths in hospitals across the country.  Few people consider this same situation exists in homes across the country -even though we are not concentrating various ill-stricken individuals within closed quarters, increasing the odds of encountering a nasty bug).  If one is looking for an effective disinfectant, consider what MARBLELIFE recommends to its service providers when cleaning and restoring bathrooms: Vital Oxide (available at marblelifeproducts.com in Gallon quantities).

DISINFECTION MYTH 2:  DISINFECTION CHEMICALS ARE CLEANERS.  INCORRECT.

DISINFECTION MYTH 3:  IT DOESN’T MATTER IF A SURFACE IS SEALED.  INCORRECT.

For best results, one wants to be working on a sealed surface, to prevent dirty and bugs from getting into difficult to clean pores and porous grout surfaces.  This can be done by ensuring your surfaces (counters, grouts, tile) have been properly sealed.  Sealing once is not enough, as UV and acidic spills will eventually remove most seals.  As such, counters should be resealed every other year.  Floor grout should be sealed with a seal color-dyed to match the grout, if sanded, and using a penetrating-clear seal if non-sanded.  Seals are generally marketed to resist the potential for staining the surface, but their presence serves another important health aspect. By sealing, you are also eliminating any possible hiding places for bugs that try to hide from the disinfectant and multiply.  Similar to a tight pore filled with bacteria.  The disinfectant can generally get to the top of but not beneath the first layer of dirt and bacteria.  The deeper bacteria can simply regenerate.  Once the grout is sealed, dirt and bacteria remain on the surface where the disinfectant can kill them, then the cleaner can remove them, dead or alive.

DISINFECTION MYTH 4:  YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT USING CLEAN WATER.  INCORRECT.
